Van Gogh’s “Irises” painting has lots of color and texture which I imitated with oil pastels. I’ve created a large mural template that has the basic shapes of this painting, but leaves room for creative interpretation. My Iris Mural consists of 24 letter-size pages. In full format it measures 40″ x 32″. This sample was colored with a 48-pack of Reeves® Oil Pastels. I used color combos for the four basic elements of the painting: light blue/dark blue for the flowers, light green/dark green for the leaves, gold/brown for the bottom ground, and green and yellow for the top. Instructions include my ideas for setting up what I call “controlled random” coloring.
